Volunteer Over Violence

It’s the holiday season and as always, our volunteers are out in full force-responding to hotline calls, supporting survivors, providing violence prevention presentations and collecting gifts for the families we serve. Volunteers are the lifeblood of our agency. POV began as a volunteer run agency in 1971 and it continues to run 24-hours 365 days a year with the ongoing support of over 200 volunteers, who alongside staff, serve over 25,000 individuals a year! This year, our volunteer program received the distinguished HALO grant award from the Carl & Roberta Deutsch Foundation. This grant will support the further development of our volunteer programs—and most importantly, it gives us a chance to recognize a stand out volunteer at POV: Janet Sudo. Janet came to us as a client and later returned to volunteer in nearly every program at POV—contributing over 400 hours a year–as a Domestic Abuse Response Team Advocate, a Violence Prevention Education Specialist, a survivor speaker with our Voices Over Violence Speakers’ Bureau and as a Self Dense Instructor.

“Volunteering has helped me grow. I think it’s been a win-win for everyone. I’ve been able to support people seeking emergency services like I did. I’m also able to educate high school and college students about how violence impacts everyone directly and indirectly-regardless of our race, class, economic background. It’s been very rewarding to educate survivors on the cycle of violence and watch them make the connections and want to make changes in their lives. I know that I’m making a positive impact in their life and in mine.”

Feeling inspired? Join Janet! We have an upcoming crisis intervention training this January; we’d love to have you join our family and this movement.
