SANTANA: Vibrations of Compassion

A highlight of 2013 for me was to meet and to present the music legend Carlos Santana along with his son Salvador Santana with the POV Humanitarian VOICE Award at our Humanitarian Awards Event in October at The Beverly Hills Hotel. And, we are thrilled that Santana-this soul & spirit was just recognized with the Kennedy Center’s Honors for his lifetime musical achievement.  Guitar legend Carlos Santana is universally loved and world renown. Some of us who can remember the Sixties will never forget how he took the Woodstock Music Festival by storm and launched a career that sold more than 100 million records and won 10 Grammys. Beyond his musical success, Carlos has been a lifelong activist and passionate about giving back. He founded The Milagro Foundation with his family in 1998 to support underserved children and youth in the areas of arts, education and health. Carlos’s son, Salvador, grew up surrounded by and playing music and developed a love and passion for piano at a young age. Now an award winning musician himself, he just recently released his new 5 song EP entitled Rise Up. Salvador has also demonstrated a commitment to supporting local communities, and regularly donates portions of his concert proceeds to nonprofit organizations. Recently, working with the Verizon sponsored Pave the Way Project, a campaign aimed at using music and arts to raise awareness around teen dating violence, Salvador and Carlos collaborated with contest winner Dymond Harding on the teen relationship-focused song “Me, Myself & I.” POV was thrilled to present the VOICE OVER VIOLENCE Award in recognition of Carlos and Salvador’s intergenerational work in using music as a healing and connecting force. We are inspired to see both a father and son using their talents as artists to engage, educate and empower people young and old.  From the podium at our event, Carlos spoke inspirationally about peace and love and urged Verizon, our event presenting sponsor, to figure out a way to spread “vibrations of compassion”  through all their cell towers!  I can’t think of a better message for this new year.  May we all feel vibrations of compassion as we enter 2014, the year of the horse.  Thank you Santana for making such powerful, unforgettable sounds.
